Why do I need to see a gynecologist?
For women to maintain optimal health, they need checkups on every system in their body, including the reproductive system. Dr. Afram’s specialty in gynecology means he knows how to diagnose and treat issues with the uterus, vulva, vagina, fallopian tubes, cervix, and ovaries. He can provide you more information on menopause, sexuality, contraceptives, infertility, and other medical issues. These are just some of the reasons to visit Dr. Afram today to maintain the health of your reproductive system.
Is it essential to see a gynecologist?
It most certainly is! Preventive care is the best way to maintain the health of your reproductive system. Regular visits and screenings can catch medical concerns early before they become more extensive and inherently more expensive to treat. Preventive care includes not only gynecological examinations but also regular screenings and tests. Maintaining a regular schedule of screenings will help identify medical concerns early as most do not show symptoms in their earlier stages. Conditions and diseases caught earlier can be treated much more effectively. Meeting with Dr. Afram also gives him a chance to bring you up to date on any changes or breakthroughs in the medical field. What were recommendations a couple of years ago may have changed and there may be new tests available to screen conditions.
Dr. Afram, along with our other doctors at our clinics, will also conduct other routine screens to help you maintain your health. These screenings can include depression, high blood pressure, diabetes, and cholesterol. He will also discuss with you any usage of drugs, alcohol, or tobacco products.
When should I visit Dr. Afram?
Patients of Dr. Afram should visit him every year for a routine checkup. Generally, most women begin to visit their gynecologist between the ages of 13 and 18. The pelvic examination aspect of a regular check-up usually does not start until someone has turned 21. These examinations can begin earlier if irregular periods, vaginal discharge, or pelvic pain occurs. If a patient is a sexually active adolescent, they should also be tested regularly for sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) as well. While pelvic examinations generally start around the age of 21, Dr. Afram will discuss with you if these are needed and how often they should occur. Not all women will need a yearly pelvic examination in all cases. Screening for cervical cancer, also known as a pap smear, should also start around age 21.
Why should I choose Dr. Afram as my gynecologist?
The selection of a gynecologist is a very important decision in a woman’s life. They need someone they feel comfortable with to talk about sensitive subjects like menopause, birth control, sex, and pregnancy. Many women find these subjects uncomfortable or embarrassing to bring up with their regular doctor. However, frank and honest discussion of these topics with a provider is key to maintaining your health. Dr. Afram is not only better versed in this area of your health but will usually have more time compared to a primary care doctor to sit down and talk with you about concerns regarding your reproductive system. Dr. Afram is also an excellent choice for adolescent girls whose are pediatrician may not have much experience in this area of health. Our doctor can educate teens about sexual function, reproduction, and safe sex practices to avoid STDs.
