Gynecological Care Q & A

What is gynecological care?

Gynecological care at Capital Women’s Care includes the detection, diagnosis, and screening for women’s health conditions, as well as a wide array of gynecological services. Routine gynecological care helps prevent or detect women’s health problems before they become serious.

Which gynecological services are available?

The Capital Women’s Care OB/GYNs offer the following gynecology services:

  • Well-woman exams
  • Pap smears
  • Contraception management
  • Menopause symptom treatment
  • STD screening and treatment
  • Fertility counseling and treatment
  • Family planning
  • Minimally invasive gynecological procedures
  • Chronic disease screening
  • Hormone therapy

Your Capital Women’s Care gynecologist can screen you for high blood pressure, high cholesterol, diabetes, thyroid problems, and depression. They can also refer you to another specialist when necessary.

What should I expect during a gynecology appointment?

During a well-woman visit, your OB/GYN reviews your medical history, asks you questions about any symptoms, and completes a comprehensive physical, pelvic, and breast exam to screen for specific women’s health problems.

During a pelvic exam, your OB/GYN might complete a Pap smear by inserting a speculum into your vagina to take a sample of cervical cells. They send the sample to a lab for cervical cancer screening.

Your Capital Women’s Care provider may also recommend blood or imaging tests, such as a mammogram, X-ray, MRI, or ultrasound, to rule out or diagnose a women's health condition.

Will I require treatment?

If you have a gynecological condition, such as cervical cancer, heavy menstrual bleeding, or menopause symptoms, your doctor might recommend one or more of the following treatments:

Medications

Taking medications for STDs, pain relief, or certain gynecological conditions can help ease symptoms and prevent women’s health problems from worsening.

Hormone replacement therapy

If you have hot flashes, vaginal dryness, fatigue, and other unpleasant symptoms of menopause, your Capital Women’s Care OB/GYN might suggest hormone replacement therapy for symptom relief.

Minimally invasive surgery

If you have endometriosis, uterine fibroids, cysts, heavy menstrual bleeding, cancer, or another gynecological condition, your doctor might recommend minimally invasive surgery as part of your treatment plan.

Birth control

Capital Women’s Care physicians offer a wide array of birth control options, such as pills, patches, implants, intrauterine devices (IUDs), and tubal ligation, to help prevent you from becoming pregnant before you’re ready.

The experienced OB/GYNs at Capital Women’s Care create personalized women’s health treatment plans based on the type and severity of symptoms, your overall health, and your preferences.

Schedule a gynecology exam once every year or more often if you experience new symptoms, are at risk of a women’s health problem, or have questions or concerns about your health. The Capital Women’s Care gynecologists let you know how often to book an appointment.
