Fibroids Q & A

What are fibroids?

Fibroids are tumors that commonly occur in women of childbearing age. They are muscular tumors that grow near or in the wall of your uterus, or womb.

Fibroids are almost always noncancerous but can lead to unpleasant symptoms that may negatively impact your quality of life.

What are the symptoms of fibroids?

You might not experience any symptoms at all with uterine fibroids. If you do, you may experience:

  • Heavy menstrual bleeding
  • Bleeding between periods
  • Painful periods
  • Periods lasting longer than a week
  • A feeling a fullness in your lower abdomen
  • Frequent urination or difficulty emptying your bladder
  • Pain during intercourse
  • Constipation
  • Lower back pain
  • Infertility, early labor, or miscarriages

Risk factors for fibroids include being African American, being overweight, genetics, drinking alcohol, eating a lot of red meat, and early onset of menstruation. If you experience sharp pelvic pain that occurs abruptly or severe vaginal bleeding, see your doctor right away.

How are fibroids diagnosed?

To diagnose fibroids, your Capital Women’s Care specialist reviews your medical history and symptoms and completes a pelvic exam.

They may use ultrasound, MRIs, or hysteroscopy to make a diagnosis, and recommend blood tests to detect or rule out health issues associated with your symptoms.

How are fibroids treated?

Your OB/GYN personalizes a fibroid treatment plan based on the type and severity of your symptoms. They might recommend:

Watchful waiting

Watchful waiting might be all that’s necessary if you have fibroids without symptoms, as fibroids generally aren’t cancerous.

Medications

Taking certain medications can target hormones associated with your menstrual cycle and shrink fibroids to reduce pelvic pain and heavy menstrual bleeding.

Noninvasive procedures

During noninvasive MRI-guided ultrasound treatment, high-energy ultrasound waves destroy fibroid tissue without surgery or downtime.

Minimally invasive procedures

The Capital Women’s Care team offers advanced, minimally invasive procedures that eliminate fibroids and your symptoms.

Examples include uterine artery embolization, radiofrequency ablation, laparoscopic or robotic fibroid removal, and minimally invasive hysterectomy. Downtime for any of these minimally invasive procedures is minimal.

Don’t let fibroids negatively affect your lifestyle when simple treatment options are available at Capital Women’s Care. Schedule an appointment over the phone or online today.
