Hysterectomy Q & A
What is a hysterectomy?
A hysterectomy is a surgical procedure during which all or part of your uterus is removed. This procedure is ideal for women suffering from a number of uterine conditions, including:
- Uterine prolapse
- Endometriosis
- Uterine fibroids
- Adenomyosis
- Uterine, ovarian, endometrial, or cervical cancer
Some women also choose to get a hysterectomy as a solution to ongoing heavy menstrual bleeding.
What are the types of hysterectomies?
Each type of hysterectomy accomplishes specific goals. Talk with your Capital Women’s Care provider about the symptoms you’re experiencing, and they can recommend the right procedure for you. There are three types of hysterectomies:
Partial hysterectomy
This procedure is also known as a supracervical or subtotal hysterectomy. During a partial hysterectomy, your Capital Women’s Care surgeon removes only the upper portion of your uterus, leaving your cervix intact.
Total hysterectomy
During a total hysterectomy, your entire uterus — including the cervix — is removed. Your Capital Women’s Care surgeon may also remove your fallopian tubes and ovaries, depending on the purpose of your procedure.
Radical hysterectomy
Most often chosen for patients with cervical cancer, a radical hysterectomy removes your entire uterus along with your cervix and the tissue surrounding it. The upper portion of your vagina is also removed.
Their goal at Capital Women’s Care is always to help you eliminate pain, menstrual problems, or health conditions with the least invasive procedure possible. To that end, they specialize in laparoscopic and robotic hysterectomies.
What is a laparoscopic and robotic hysterectomy?
During a traditional hysterectomy, surgeons use a relatively large incision across your abdomen to perform the procedure. But the surgeons at Capital Women’s Care can use a laparoscope — a long, thin instrument with a small camera on the end — and robotic instruments to perform your hysterectomy through extremely small keyhole incisions.
This means you have less postoperative discomfort, heal faster, and are left with less scarring. It also minimizes the risk of complications. Your Capital Women’s Care surgeon is committed to performing the most minimally invasive hysterectomy possible.
